Doctor Who’s Billie Piper returns to the telly in much less than you’re used to seeing her in traveling around with a Timelord. She strips off for her new job as a hooker in this funny, sexy show based on the blog of a lady of the evening in modern London.
Belle (Billie Piper) loves her job. Well, her real name is Hannah but she uses Belle as her stage name. Is she in the theater? Well, not really since her theater is the bedroom but she is a trooper when it comes to performing. Belle is a high-class hooker.
Her family thinks that she’s in industry and not in-between-the-sheets, but her best friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg) does know of her chosen profession. Her Madame is Stephanie (Cherie Lunghi) who finds her the johns that she services.
Belle enjoys sex and her job, but this season she finds both complicated by Bambi (Ashley Madekwe), a new girl that Belle takes under her wing, and Alex (Callum Blue), a doctor that she enters into a relationship with but he doesn’t know about Belle’s job.
Billie Piper came into my sights when she was cast in the iconic Brit show Doctor Who as Rose Tyler. She had a successful UK recording career before making the leap to actress. The show is based on the life and times of Belle De Jour, a real life lady of the evening who blogged about her profession.
The show made the leap across the pond and airs on Showtime. Showtime liked the show so much they didn’t just steal the idea and recast but aired the UK show as it had aired originally. Piper is a delight as the streetwise call girl and offers some funny observations about herself and her clientele.
The show has some hilarious takes on the subject matter but also is sexy as well. This second season does tend to get more serious as Belle has to balance her “career” and her budding relationship. As you can imagine this leads to some drama, not the mention that Piper was pregnant during this season.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features on disc one include an 8-minute interview with Billie Piper and trailers of other Lionsgate DVDs. Disc two has 13 minutes of promotional webisodes.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl is a triple threat. Piper is hot, the show is great, and it’s definitely sexy. This season does a good job of balancing Belle’s chosen job with the conflict of her personal life. It’s a show that keeps getting better.
