Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Friday the 13th made a bushel full of money and the quickest way to cash in on it again was to make a sequel. Part 2 pretty much remade the first one, but Jason was given star billing (wearing a flour sack).
Years have passed and Alice (Adrienne King) is recovering from her terrors at Camp Crystal lake. She’s then stalked by an intruder, discovers that something has gone bad in her fridge, and then joins her friends in the grave as the intruders kills her.
Near the abandoned Camp Crystal lake camp, a group of counselors, Sandra (Marta Kober), Jeff (Bill Randolph), Terry (Kirsten Baker), Mark (Tom McBride), Vicki (Lauren-Marie Taylor), Scott (Russell Todd) and Paul’s girlfriend Ginny (Amy Steel), in training are attending a similar camp to be schooled by Paul Holt (John Furey) on how to properly control their young charges.
The prowler that killed Alice turns out to be Jason Voorhees (Warrington Gillette) who witnessed the beheading of his mother (Betsy Palmer) and now keeps that mummified head on an altar as he continues her killing spree. Since the campground that he “drowned” at has been abandoned he’s moving his murderous ways to the counselor training camp next door.
I’m not really spoiling it for you, but the killer of the first film turned out not to be Jason Voorhees. Jason was a plot point and a jump scare reserved for the end of the first picture. Part 2 will only further the spoilage since the last events of the first film are repeated for you.
However in Part 2, Jason steps out of the shadows to become the determined killing machine that we’ve all come to know and love (unless you’re reading this in a campground then you better hope you don’t meet up with a silent assassin in a hockey mask).
Of course, you won’t really recognize the brute since he’s not wearing the signature hockey mask until the third sequel. He does plow through a long line of teens as he would continue to do with each moneymaking sequel.
In “Jason wave one” only the first film was treated to a high definition transfer and with the reboot coming out on DVD and Blu-ray its Part 2 and 3D given high definition transfers, along with parts 4-6 getting DVD special edition treatment.
Friday the 13th Part 2 is presented in a 1080p high definition transfer (1.85:1). Special features are presented in high definition, unless otherwise noted. The 11 minute “Inside Crystal Lake Memories” which is an interview with author Peter Bracke about his book inspired by the series.
The 7 minute “Friday’s Legacy” looks at horror convention footage. The 9 minute “Lost Tales from Camp Blood – Part 2” is the second part of the short film series inspired by the slasher. The 29 minute “Jason Forever” (standard definition) is a panel discussion with four of the actors who have played Jason, Ari Lehman, Warrington Gillette, C.J. Graham, and Kane Hodder. Finally, you have the film’s 2 minute theatrical trailer.
Jason finally comes to his own in the second part of the series and would eventually find his way into space and beyond. Part 2 serves up another heaping helping of grue that should please fans, even more so in high def.
Friday the 13th, Part 2 [Blu-ray] is now available at Amazon . Visit the DVD database for more information.
