Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt, especially when it is attached to a mythic group or has a deep and perplexing mystery surrounding it? There are words that conjure visions of hidden wealth and ancient curses, but perhaps none of them are as compelling as the legend of the Knights Templar.
Watching The Last Templar miniseries on television was an event! Rarely do audiences these days have a production of this caliber appear on network television! It was so good, and enjoyable, exciting, and fun, it will be a welcome addition to any action adventure dvd collection.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Scott Foley, the twists and turns of the story based on Raymond Khoury’s international best selling novel will enthrall returning audiences as well as newcomers.
Mira Sorvino plays archeologist Tess Chaykin, a strong independent scientist, a persona rather like Indiana Jones, but who is as comfortable in high heels as she is in explorer kit. She can go from posh museum gala openings to roughing it in the desert in search of the Templar treasure, maintaining a spunky and authoritative style.
Teamed with FBI agent Sean Daley (Scott Foley) after a robbery of priceless Vatican treasures by of what appears to be four Templar horsemen right out of history, Tess is ready to scour the ends of the earth to bring closure to the mystery.
The relationship between the FBI agent and the intrepid archeologist is anything but amicable. Their strengths bounce off each other, and cause quite a bit of difficulty, until they grudgingly acknowledge the abilities they both possess, and begin to work towards the goal.
The modern day story is interspersed with historical flashbacks to 1291 when the Holy Roman Empire lost its hold in the Holy Land. The last of the Templar knights flee the city of Acre with something secret of great importance to the order and are last known to have boarded a ship which never reached its destination.
In the modern day, Victor Garber plays Monsignor De Angelis a Vatican envoy who has accompanied the display pieces to guard their safety, and seems most knowledgeable about the Templar secrets. Add to this already great cast, respected actor Omar Shariff as Konstantine a Greek man who has uncanny perception, and whose wisdom is put to good use by both Tess and Agent Daley.
The Last Templar is presented on single disc in widescreen format with a playing time of 170 minutes. Along with the miniseries are a featurette The Making of The Last Templar, which goes into detail over both production challenges, and storyline development, using interviews with cast and crew as well as intriguing back stage scenes. There is also an image gallery with Storyboards included.
If you have not seen The Last Templar, it is a good action/adventure miniseries with all the best entertainment elements.
