Actually, it's best for the movie that it doesn't deal with Stauffenberg's motivations. Stauffenberg had recognized that defeat was inevitable, and was hoping to capitulate to the Allies in grand fashion by delivering a dead Hitler. You can argue whether these motives make him a great man, but I doubt the viewer would identify with him to the same extent if they portrayed the reality that he was killing Hitler not for anything Hitler did or didn't do, but simply as a way out.

Excellent and accurate review. Not normally a Tom Cruise fan, I loved this film. I thought his portrayal of von Stauffenberg was excellent and he was well supported by an outstanding cast. Valkyrie manages to be both historically accurate and incredibly epic and entertaining - rare for a Hollywood film. As a history buff and war movie aficionado, I can comfortably say that this is one of the best films of 2008 and one of the best war movies I have seen.
