We’re going back to South Park. Gonna have ourselves a time. Blu-rays, Blu-rays everywhere. The Twelfth season of the Comedy Central show makes it onto the high definition format and provides some cutting satire as well as some belly laughs.
It’s hard to believe that South Park has been on since 1997 and has 182 episodes under its belt. Its just started its thirteenth season (a lucky number?) and still has some of the most cutting edge and hilarious satire on the telly today.
Season twelve turns Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s scissors fueled satire towards HIV (“Tonsil Trouble”), Breast Cancer (“Breast Cancer Show Ever”), Britney Spears voyeurism (“Britney’s New Look”), Heavy Metal (“Major Boobage”), obsession with the Internet (“Over Logging”), Imperialism (“The China Problem”), Politics (“About Last Night”), and even the Twilight phenomenon (“The Ungroundable”) and High School Musical (“Elementary School Musical”) as our cast of Kyle, Stan, Kenny, and Cartman work their way through these subjects.
Our lads have no reservations about any subject as their tacking HIV in a comedy bit attest to. They speak to so many subjects that various groups have said that Stone and Parker belong with them, though the boys usually turn around and skewer those same groups on next weeks show. So they clearly have no favorites and are not afraid to tackle any subject matter, no matter how sacred.
South Park is presented in a 1080i high definition transfer (1.78:1). Each episode is given a “mini-commentary” by Matt Stone and Trey Parker condensing their thoughts into a few minutes.
Disc one has a 13 minute piece called “Making Boobage” that details the making of the episode that pays tribute to the 1981 film Heavy Metal (in standard definition). Disc two has the 82 minute “Six Days to South Park” which details the six days that it takes to make a show (in standard definition).
Disc three has a 22 minute “Behind the Scenes” that looks at the episode “About Last Night” and is the only special feature that is in high definition. You also get a digital copy of the show for your PC or portable device.
South Park continues to entertain, but also examines real life issues with its unflinching satirical eye. They’ve lost none of their cutting edge ability to skewer various social subjects and do so with a biting sense of humor.
I would’ve liked to have seen more of the special features in high definition or some Blu-ray exclusive features since you’ll be paying a bit more for this set. South Park makes its high definition debut and you’ll be able to see more detail in this version. The comedy comes at no extra charge.
