“Rumspringa!”
Rev up the engine and get ready for some goofball antics as a hapless shrub travels across country to get some. The comedy might not be anything too original but there are some salacious scenes and a few moments of hilarity to keep you interested on this road trip.
Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is a hapless high school graduate who is unlucky in love… well, more like unlucky in sex. He bumbles every opportunity he has with the gals and his attempts to impress usually go awry. That is in person as he’s also created a fictionalized version of himself (complete with doctored photo) for the Internet.
He’s chatting with a “Ms. Tasty” and she offers to do let him do anything he wants to her but he has to drive to Knoxville, Tennessee. His horn dog pal Lance (Clarke Duke) is all for it and the two steal Rex’s (James Marsden), Ian’s brother, cherry 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge for the road trip.
On the way out of town Ian’s best friend Felicia (Amanda Crew) hitches a ride with them to get away from her troubles, but has no idea that the boy’s are going on a sex drive and not to “visit Grandma.” Along the way they’ll encounter an Amish guy named Ezekiel (Seth Green) with a dry sense of humor, a deranged hitchhiker (David Koechner), Lances falls for a hot Amish girl (Alice Greczyn), and other hurdles before Ian can get to Knoxville and pop his cherry.
Ian also discovers all along the way that love might’ve always have been under his nose and that he didn’t have to drive across the country to find it (and no he doesn’t start to fall in love with Lance).
It doesn’t say William Shakespeare’s Sex Drive on the cover so don’t expect anything beyond the ordinary sex comedy. However, what you do get is something that is very funny. Josh Zuckerman may have played a young Dr. Evil in Goldmember, but he looks like Freddy Prinze, Jr. (Freddy Prinze, Jr., Jr.?).
However, he has a likeability and intelligence that Prinze lacks, well not that he’s allowed to do much with intelligence since his character is a bumbling doofus. Clark Duke gets more of the lovable rogue in the picture and has a Hugh Hefner high schooler feel to his character.
Amanda Crew is cute in a typical girl role in this horny epic. We know where the plot is going but part of the fun is getting there and there are some funny bits between the opening and closing credits. What’s even more funny is the unrated, uncircumcised version that adds lots more (and I quote) “tits and cock.”
These scenes are just inserted randomly, but there’s also some outtakes, alternate scenes, and improv that also turn up in this version. It only adds some deranged hilarity to an already funny movie. It’s a fun ride if you’re in the mood.
Sex Drive is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1 for the R-rated version and 1.85:1 for the unrated version) enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Both cuts are presented on disc one on a dual sided disc. The R-rated cut has a commentary with director Sean Anders, writer/producer John Morris, and producer Bob Levy.
The unrated version has an introduction with Morris and Anders with Duke and Crew stepping in as well. Disc two has some tongue-in-cheek documentaries. The 11 minute “Sex Drive: Making a Masterpiece” seems to think that William Shakespeare did write the film. The 4 minute “The Marsden Dilemma” is a comedic look at what the cast thinks of him.
The 4 minute “Clark: Duke of the Internet” looks at his rise to fame. The 18 minute “Killing Time in Hollywood (florida)” looks at how the cast kills time in the small town they were shooting in.
Sex Drive didn’t win any Oscars the other night, but it does have some funny moments. They’re made even funnier by the over-the-top “uncircumcised” version. It’s a cute, funny flick with some belly laughs flavored by some horny high schoolers. The special features are also a hoot.
