We all love stories of mysterious creatures, things that skirt the edges of reality, and often are said to exist among us, unknown and undetected.
Think of monsters and one thinks of Loch Ness’s famous inhabitant, or Big Foot roaming the wilds of Western America. Somehow just hearing the tales of such creatures sets our imaginations free; if they can exist, why not others? Monster Quest sets out to explore all the evidence available for such monsters and present their case to the viewing public.
Season Two of Monster Quest has some surprises. For example one episode is devoted to ghost or spirit hunting at the residence of one of America’s most famous “monsters,” alleged axe-murderess Lizzie Borden.
Audiences see and hear evidence of spiritual activity on premises, with special equipment and recording devices. Some of that is chilling, but not as much as the actual crimes that took place in that house. In addition to hunting ghosts at Lizzie’s house, the team looks for Big Foot in New York based on reported sightings.
Across the Atlantic ocean, the Black Beast of Exmoor England has residents worried and confounded. A reported Wildman in China has been seen and described by many and then there is the case of Vampires in America. In addition to those stories, there are the gigantic beasts to be sought out. These are bears, snakes, a squid like Capt. Nemo encountered in 200,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a Mega Hog which might not sound so scary until you see the evidence, monster spiders which will chill the arachnophobic viewers and euuuuuuuu a super rat.
There is a lot of geography and mythology explored within this series! While not everything turns up as believable or with proof enough to declare it real, there is still the thrill of exploration and research undertaken to provide some answers as to how the myths began.
A bit scary for younger children, the older children to teens will probably find it fascinating. Kids of our acquaintance (and we are talking 10 to 15 year olds) are intrigued by the blend of history, science and monster mythology involved. Some of these episodes have generated additional research and much discussion among these viewers.
The episodes present a good background history of the sightings and/or occurrences of each monster. Some do seem to belong to the realm of imagination, but the team of investigators look at all evidence openly. It is an entertaining way to have the creepiness of a horror show, but also learn some history in the process.
MonsterQuest - Season Two is presented on five discs containing 20 episodes. The running time is a little over 15 hours for these episodes. There are also interesting specials added to the set.
There are a series of featurettes, Bigfoot, Cryptozoology (which is the study of these possibly imaginary beasts and beings - something that one young friend has decided will be her life’s study) a tour of the Cryptozoology Museum, Dragons, Hybrids, Lake Monsters, MermIds, Sea Monsters and Thunderbirds.
Many of these beings have such deep roots in various cultures, it is intriguing to see how they have influenced the lives of the peoples who tell their tales.
MonsterQuest - Season Two is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for this version of the DVD in the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
