All children can be spooky. They sometimes creep you out by saying things that are completely odd or foreign to their supposed realm of experiences. In the collection Psychic Kids, audiences will see some real children whose abilities are guaranteed to raise the hair raise on the back the neck and send shivers down the spine.
One young woman in the series says “psychic ability is a gift, but more often it is a burden.” As psychic/medium Chip Coffey and clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Miller meet and interview children and adolescents with special psychic abilities, the overall feeling is that loneliness is a major problem.
Most of these children have been experiencing psychic phenomena for years, and have told parents, but everyone is afraid to let others into the secret. Most are afraid of being stereotyped as mentally ill, or simply as needy of attention. As a result these families often live in self-inflicted isolation from others.
In some cases, one of the children with a psychic gift, will choose to withdraw from social interaction for fear of being discovered. In most cases it is striking how otherwise “normal” a life these children lead with truly caring parental figures and how everyone is at their wit’s end at how to manage the gift or the knowledge of the gift.
Bringing families together that have psychic children is the first step in a process of learning and healing. As the children gain insight into how to manage their abilities, their parents have the opportunity to meet and discuss strategies with others facing the same challenges.
This show is entertaining to watch whether one is a skeptic or a believer in the paranormal. Strong principles of self preservation, caring and esteem are part of the process that these children are taught. They are shown techniques to empower their thinking about their gifts and managing the emotions that arise.
Whether or not one has psychic abilities, developing an arsenal of methods to deal with negative emotions, thoughts, energies and events can only be beneficial. Coping mechanisms for fears and the practice of being open-minded about life’s experiences are skills worth practicing.
The range and scope of abilities are explored in the series episodes. Some of these gifted children will be healers, able to use their insight to help diagnose illness and physical problems.
Others may be sensitive to emotions or feelings, so that they can use their gifts in mental health professions. Others have a sense of spirits and something akin to a pre-cognition of events, which would be fascinating to follow and see how all of these youngsters progress.
Psychic Kids is presented on two discs, with a playing time of 4 hours and 42 minutes for the series. Special to this set is a feature length documentary Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal.
This series is well constructed, beautifully filmed with special effects to enhance the “atmosphere” of eeriness. The crew is not intrusive into the story, and these families speak for themselves. It is a show that will make you ponder the boundaries that we accept as actualities.
Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
