It is a rare thing in this life to be able to get the best of the best for our very own. This 25th Anniversary Commemorative Edition of The Cosby Show is simply the finest treatment of an excellent series, in an elegant format with all kinds of special features and treats. This belongs in every family’s DVD collection.
First of all Bill Cosby is a person of such merit, he ought to be declared an American National Treasure. Before the Cosby show, he had generated legions of fans with his comedy routines and albums, and as a tennis playing secret agent in the television series “I, Spy.”
Many Americans though, know him best as Dr. Cliff Huxtable, patriarch of the family we grew up watching and learning from, as their problems mirrored so many of our own. Everyone watched The Cosby Show, and there must be thousands of times the episodes started family discussions that brought people closer together and with a sense of understanding.
We could identify with one or several members of the Huxtable family, and the laughter and tears were real for us all.
Far from being a trip down memory lane, the Cosby Show episodes are fresh and timeless. The styles may change, but human beings don’t alter that much. Like other treasured classics the stories will have meaning for today’s children and adults.
For those who grew up watching the Huxtables it should be fun to see the early episodes again and decide which family member you are like today.
“Goodbye Mr. Fish” the second episode in the series is still as funny and touching as it was 25 years ago, maybe even more so since I’ve had the experience of saying words of comfort at a family pet “funeral.” Spend time with the Huxtables again, and invite you family to join in the fun.
The 25th Anniversary Commemorative Edition of The Cosby Show is presented in an elegantly boxed set of four folders, each containing two seasons. Program notes for the episodes are printed on the folders as well as stills from the seasons.
The last discs of Season One and Season Two have the bonus or special features, and what riches these are with new information as well as retrospectives on the show. Season One is a Two Part Interview with Bill Cosby, a featurette The Cosby Show: A Look Back,” and a Digital Photo Gallery.
Season Two has Bloopers, Cliff’s Parenting Tips and an Interview with Director Jay Sandrich. To finish off the ultimate set, there is a hardbound booklet containing the script of the first episode, and illustrated with color photographs of the characters.
At the end is a list of all the special guest stars, and the awards that the Cosby Show won through the years. A personal message from Mr. Cosby accompanies a commemorative photo of the Hirschfeld drawing.
