Had anyone asked me seven seasons ago if I expected this crazy half hour show to make it so long, I would have answered in the negative. It IS funny, but I thought it might just prove to be a one joke series, and just how many times could we see Turk and J. D. act like eight year olds and still laugh.
Apparently the possibilities are endless, as the seventh season of Scrubs comes to DVD and audiences are still laughing.
Scrubs continues to be funny and entertaining with its wacky blend of humor, weirdness and presentation of relevant problems in today’s world. One thing that makes this show such fun is that the cast seems to be having a great time, and that carries through into their performances.
They are serious about their work, but the ability to see the humor (not to mention play it for all it is worth) is strong in each and every person. Matched with a director that gives them room to play, the result is nearly flawless comedy/drama.
Special features on the DVD allow audiences to see the amount of work it takes for the creation of comedy. These are not just people goofing off and filming the result, as we see from the first read-through of the script, where everyone is laughing, but some serious concentration is needed to perfect the delivery of lines, to scenes of alternate dialog or lines, where actors try various methods of delivery or even other dialog to enhance the humor of the scene.
The seventh season of Scrubs is very baby oriented. It opens with J. D. (Zach Braff) about to become a father. The mother of his child is a fellow doctor that he dated and slept with once, resulting in baby. He loves the idea of the baby, but loving the mother, well, not so much.
Carla and Turk are experiencing all the joys and trials of parenthood with their little girl, and Elliott wants to be married. The icing on the cake of comedy for this season is a fabulous fantasy episode titled “My Princess.” This is an homage to Princess Bride, a favorite movie of most of the cast and crew.
From a two-headed monster “Turla” to a giant that doesn’t eat babies but will chomp on a toddler as they are “crunchier,” this episode is a treat. Zach Braff directed it, and works harder than anyone to get the best performances.
Scrubs The Complete Seventh Season is presented on two discs containing all eleven episodes. The bonus features are great and truly enhance the season. Included are a One-on-One interview featurette with Ken Jenkins (Dr. Bob Kelso), a featurette My Making of II: My Princess, deleted scenes, audio commentaries for episodes with various cast and crew members, alternate lines for certain scenes, and bloopers.
This is a set that will please Scrubs fans and entertain viewers with peeks behind the scenes of how comedy is perfected.
