Numb3rs is one of those shows that has so much more than just drama and a good mystery to offer to its viewers. In its fourth season, in spite of the writer’s strike, the stories continued to entertain and make us think about the world in which we live, reconsider our fragility and appreciate what is good when compared to the crimes these people deal with on a daily basis.
Math is definitely NOT my strong point, and so it is up to the resident scientist to provide further explanation for some of the equations and principles that Charlie Epps (David Krumholtz) uses when helping his brother Don (Rob Morrow) and the FBI solve crimes. Even the connection with the dreaded math doesn’t quench my enthusiasm for this show.
It is polished and intelligent, with good mysteries and valid subject matter based on today’s headlines. Mix this with emotional connections of parent Alan Epps (Judd Hirsch) and his sons, and the romantic attachments between Amita (Navi Rawat) and Charlie, Megan (Dianne Farr) and Larry (Peter McNichol) and a devoted hard working team par excellence in Colby (Dylan Bruno) and David (Alimi Ballard) and you have a very fine show.
Not only do we see the workings of the FBI, with their crime solving technology, but the viewer is allowed into the internal offices of academia in the math’s department. With the help of Charlie and Dr. Larry Fleinharrdt, crime takes on patterned forms.
Using theories and equations to predict strikes and/or assaults, these math geniuses aid the FBI in tracking the culprits. In addition to crime solving and math, there are explorations of the bonds of loyalty, duty, bravery and love, both romantic and fraternal. One never knows what each week’s episode will bring, in terms of story or of revelation about one of the characters.
Will Megan and Dr. Larry be able to make their relationship work? Is Cody really a double agent, selling out his friends at the agency to some unknown power? Can Don and Charlie work together as a team without sibling rivalry getting the better of them? It is a series that fans look forward to viewing each week, and a fast hour on television.
