Each season of Medium has been an adventure, something that not only entertains but gives viewers intriguing situations, ideas and storylines to ponder each week long after the episode is finished.
Even with the writer’s strike and starting late, Medium delivered a Season Four that was both carefully crafted and acted to perfection, as well as providing viewers with interesting material for thought.
After the dramatic turns in the lives of the DuBois family in Season Three, and executive decisions to start Season Four late, viewers understandably felt some concern as to what might happen in the series and what might happen to it.
What Medium Season Four lacked in number of episodes, it made up for in quality of story, production and as always excellence in acting. The addition of Anjelica Houston as AmeriTips investigator Cynthia Keener was brilliant.
Allison (Patricia Arquette) and Cynthia are a formidable pair, and their interaction was amazing to watch. They are two very different women trying to work together on a problem, each approaching it from her unique perspective. It was fun to watch them battle and compromise and ultimately solve the case.
There were very dark moments and gruesome crimes in this season, but thank goodness the DuBois family were back in form. One of the best things about the series is the relationship between Allison and Joe (Jake Webber) and the way they are raising their three girls.
Joe is just the correct blend of intelligent yet vulnerable partner for Allison, and as much as he needs her sensitivity, he can be strong where she is emotional. In return she gives his scientific edge a human touch. Sofia Vassilieva just gets better and better, and she was good to begin with as eldest child Ariel.
A very touching episode has her dream experiencing her mom’s teen age years. Maria Lark as middle child Bridget is completely convincing, as a self-assured and determined personality not letting birth order hold her back. The resident scientist says he thinks she is destined to become an engineer like Joe.
Even Marie (Madison and Meredith Cabello) is growing up and has some fun moments with her paranormal abilities. She can read minds! This opens up a whole new vista for thought as it appears the girls have inherited their mom’s gift, and then some!
Medium The Fourth Season is presented on four discs, in widescreen format with a running time of 11 hours and 22 minutes. There are some nice special features included in the set. A gag reel is really fun to watch, and deleted scenes with commentary by Glenn Gordon Caron and Larry Teng add special touches to episodes. Joe’s Crayon Dream is fascinating look at a wonderful sequence in an that serves as inspiration for Joe. Introducing Cynthia Keener lets viewers meet this complex new character, and The Making Of Medium Season 4 is full of the goodies we love to see about production and cast views of the show.
All together a great set for Medium fans!
