Detective Vic Mackey is back and this season he finds himself suffering the loss of one of his team members and he’s also under investigation himself. This next to last season features some fine episodes as well as some nice special features for the fans.
The Shield is about an experimental division of the Los Angeles police force set up in the Farmington district. An anti-gang division called the Strike Team Even will stop at nothing to keep the street clean.
Even as a hardened cop, things have never been tougher for Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), the leader of the Strike Team. He must deal with a vicious, gang-related slaughter with no leads, the desperate attempts of an Internal Affairs detective Kavenaugh (Forrest Whitaker) to discredit him, and the looming threat of forced retirement.
To top it all, he's obsessed with finding the killer of a valued Strike Team member and friend. Meanwhile, Shane hooks up with the Armenian mob and becomes a dangerous adversary to Vic, Claudette (CCH Pounder) struggles to keep the Barn from being shut down, and Dutch (Jay Karnes) suffers the wrath of his arrogant new partner Billings (David Marciano).
The Shield is one of the best shows on television and it owes it all to the fiery performance of Michael Chiklis.
Season six sets up the finale of the show, as the next season will end the series. Chiklis is the leader but the show features a cast of characters that you can’t help but wanting to tune in each week to see how the continuing storyline is playing out.
This season was supposed to air along with season five but it was divided up to make the show play out a little longer. This season just sets up the fireworks that will have the show go out with a bang, not that there’s not enough intrigue and action in this season to keep you watching.
The Shield is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. There are commentaries on eight of the ten episodes of season six with luminaries such as Chiklis and even director Frank Darabont. Eight episodes also feature deleted scenes with optional commentary.
Disc one has the 30 minute Saturn’s Sons” which details the production of this season. Disc four has the 29-minute “Two Directors’ profiling directors Frank Darabont and Paris Barclay. There’s also the 14 minute “Full Circle: Franka Potente” about her guest starring on the series.
An excellent show that features a powerhouse performance by Michael Chiklis as well as a talented supporting cast. It’s a shame that the next season ends the show but you have this excellent set to remind you of the good old days.
