Here is the perfect answer for those “theme night” movie viewing sessions. Universal has put together a Romantic Comedy foursome that will be the ticket for long lasting entertainment.
Along Came Polly is the first film in this collection. Starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston, it is the crazy story of a young man whose new bride leaves him on their honeymoon. Devastated he returns home, and is in an almost trance-like state of existence until he meets Polly.
Of course, she shakes him up and turns him back towards the living. This is a very funny film, with some great supporting cast contributing wonderful performances.
Alec Baldwin as Stiller’s boss is a hoot, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Stiller’s best friend, a former child star now doing local theatre has some of the funniest scenes and lines in the whole picture.
The running time for Along Came Polly is 1 hour and 31 minutes, it is widescreen and has English subtitles. It is rated PG-13.
The second feature The Wedding Date stars Deborah Messing and Dermot Mulroney. Messing has to go to England to attend her sister’s wedding. Her ex-fiance is slated to be Best Man, so she hires an escort to play her new love.
When she arrives, the viewer can tell why she has gone to such extremes, as her family is horrific trying to give her guilt trips about her broken romance, her sister’s good fortune, etc. The only person who understands is her stepfather, and he is somewhat helpless in the wave of her mother’s energy.
True romance will break through the tangled web of deception. The feature is 1 hour and 29 minutes, presented in widescreen format with English subtitles available. It is rated PG-13.
Intolerable Cruelty stars George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a comedy that has moments of meanness. Clooney is a lawyer who is bored with his life, he is wealthy, successful, and highly sought after as a top divorce attorney.
He thinks he needs a challenge, and when he meets Catherine Zeta-Jones, she seems to fit the bill. She is trying to divorce her rich husband and get all of his money. There are twists and turns in this film, that make it more complex than just another boy meets girl story, and the best scenes are those between Clooney and Zeta-Jones, full of chemistry and sparkle.
The feature is presented in widescreen with a playing time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Subtitles are available in English. The film is rated Pg-13.
The final film in the Romantic Comedy collection is Rob Reiner’s The Story of Us starring Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer. This is not exactly the film I would choose as a romantic comedy. There are funny moments, but more prevalent are fights and confusion about the status of a fifteen year marriage.
Willis and Pfeiffer as Ben and Katie, decide on a trial separation, and while apart they examine their feelings and memories.
This film is widescreen format, and has a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. Subtitles are available in English, and the film is rated PG-13.
Romantic Comedy Pack Quadruple Feature is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for this version of the DVD in the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
