“I hate video games.”
Uwe Boll directs again and this time he’s gone Postal. No doubt his critics go the same way when the news comes out that he’s developing another film. The film is the epitome of bad taste, irreverent, and definitely politically incorrect.
Postal Dude (Zack Ward) is married to a whale of a gal, lives in Paradise, Arizona –which is anything but, and is currently unemployed. He’s looking for work and after accidentally killing an aggressive panhandler (Michael Pare) he needs some quick cash to get out of town.
He approaches his Uncle Dave (Dave Foley) who has set himself up as a guru, even writing his own bible. Uncle Dave has learned that the only remaining shipment of “Crotchy dolls” is making their way to the Little Germany theme park in Paradise (ran by Uwe Boll no less, claiming his wealth comes from Nazi gold and pays in gold teeth!).
Uncle Dave’s plan is to intercept the shipment and sell the valuable collectibles. Not only are Uncle Dave and Dude after the shipment but the Taliban, led by Osama Bin Laden (Larry Thomas), is also after the shipment. International superstar Verne Troyer (Verne Troyer [insert rimshot here]) and voice of Crotchy is also at the park and gets caught up in all the mayhem.
Does that make it a good film? Not really. The film may well be the best shot film that I’ve seen of Boll’s and perhaps his best use of budget. He has some names in the cast, even Seymour Cassel in a cameo as I was a bit shocked to see him appear (but it’s only two scenes and really somewhat of a waste).
The film does have some amusing plot bits and I suppose that you have to give it some kudos in its irreverence. As the film goes on it tends to loose focus and goes all over the place. You’d wish that an editor could’ve pulled the more entertaining bits together into a better film.
The press on the box calls the film a live action version of South Park and in spirit that may be close to the truth, but you have to remember that South Park only runs thirty minutes and not one hundred minutes.
Postal is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features include a commentary with director Uwe Boll. There’s also the 14-minute “Raging Boll” that details when Uwe challenged those ripping his films to a boxing match.
The 15 second “Verne Troyer clip” has Troyer dressed up as Indiana Jones in a promotion saying that Postal is a better than the latest Jones installment. Next is 9 minutes of “Behind the Scenes” footage and the 90-second trailer. A second disc contains the PC game of Postal 2.
Uwe Boll seems to be improving as time goes on or perhaps he just needs to stick to sick comedies. That’s not saying that it’s a great film, but you have to admire Boll’s spitting in the face of political correctness. However, prepare to be offended if you’re one that doesn’t understand satire. I still wish that Boll had a better editor.
