Here is perhaps the perfect DVD entertainment for girls ages 8 to 13 at a sleep over, or pajama party as we called them a few years back.
Parents will have no worries with the high energy, good clean fun music adventure featuring the Jonas Brothers and new comer Demi Levato as talented youngsters attending a camp devoted to music and dance.
Camp Rock doesn’t have a complicated plot, however, it is filled with the type of lessons in integrity, honesty, self-respect, and friendship that we experienced in the original Mickey Mouse Club serials.
Some of you may be old enough to remember “Annette” (Annette starred as Annette) a MMC serial in which a girl of a lower socioeconomic class comes to live with her relatives to attend a big high school. Mean rich girl Laura accuses Annette of stealing her charm bracelet, when she feels overshadowed by Annette’s talents and popularity with “the gang.”
It is a similar situation in Camp Rock. Mitchie (Levato) can only afford to attend the prestigious Camp Rock when her mother gets the job of catering the food service. Mitchie has to help in the kitchen, and is embarrassed by it, resulting in her telling a whopper of a lie about her family, hoping that will make her fit in. Her talent equals if not surpasses that of mean rich girl Tess (Meaghan Jette Martin).
Tess ferrets out Mitchie’s secret, forces her to tell the truth in front of everyone, including rock star Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) who is teaching dance at the camp and has become friends with Mitchie. When it looks as though Mitchie is able to recover her poise and retain her friends including Shane, Tess accuses her of stealing her gold charm bracelet.
Mixed in with this Tess versus Mitchie storyline, are incidences of young people discovering their talents, finding a sense of self-respect and pride, and learning to value the benefits of a true friendship. All of this is blended with music and dance performances that are fun to watch, and sure to please the tweenies as well as older and younger members of the family.
Camp Rock, the Extended Rock Star Edition is presented on single disc, in full screen format with a playing time of 98 minutes. This disc is loaded with features that will most likely be as popular with the fans as the film itself.
Backstage Disney offers How to Be A Rock Star, a series of bits explaining how everyone can be a rock star, but in a good way. There is a featurette on the Jonas Brothers as real live rock stars, a featurette Introducing Demi Lovato, a photograph album of stills called Camp Memories, the making of “Hasta La Vista” from rehearsal to Final Jam, and “Too Cool” setting the scene.
In addition there is “Music & More” in which music videos are available in extend versions for “Start the Party and “We Rock.” There is a feature in which viewers can sing along with the movie and there is also Camp Rock Karaoke.
This is a lot of entertainment in one disc, and should thrill Jonas Brothers fans, as well as youngsters who are interested in music.
