Law & Order SVU fans are a loyal group. They love this show and go to great lengths not to miss an episode, and now this week they can add Season Seven to their DVD collections.
I’ve spoken with a long time fan who has shared some interesting thoughts as to why this series is so well liked, and I believe her answers mirror those of many others.
First of all, this branch of the Law & Order family of shows is Special Victims Unit, and deals with crimes of a sexual nature. Often it is difficult to watch these episodes, because of the horror and suffering the victim has had to endure.
The thing that keeps the fans watching is that for the most part the crimes are solved and justice prevails. My SVU fan friend is a journalism major, and she says the storylines that are connected to modern day headlines are the most fascinating to watch.
However, all of the stories have an immediate journalistic quality to them, and are excellent representations of professionals dealing with the problems in a professional way. Mixed with the expected distance stance that these investigators have to take in a case is the emotion of character development of the recurring cast members, and that makes an interesting blend for the show.
As the show has progressed through the years, the viewer has learned bits and pieces about each of the characters, building up information on their back-stories, something that gives them believability and dimensions. One can imagine that they have lives outside of their very stress provoking work.
Both Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni have received critical acclaim for their performances as detectives for the SVU, with an Emmy award and an Emmy nomination, respectively. The quality of the acting is on such a level as to make audiences feel that they are part of the team as the investigations go forward.
As in real life, even at the darkest times, there will be a break in the stress with humor. This again makes the show seem very real, and encourages audiences to care about the characters and to keep watching to see how they will handle their load of difficult cases.
Law & Order SVU is presented on five discs, in widescreen format. English and Spanish subtitles are available, and it is fifteen hours and 30+ minutes in playing time. Each episode presents a case and is filled with a fine array of guest stars.
Special guest stars for year 7 include Dean Cain, Marcia Gay Harden, Brittany Snow and Mark McGrath in roles that are grippingly intense and dramatically challenging. The show is described as the “series that never flinches from tackling today’s toughest topics head on.”
Law and Order: Special Victims Unit - The Seventh Year is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
