Stargate fans, here is another goodie for your collection. Stargate Continuum is out on DVD with some great specials to add to the fun and adventure. What could be better than the SG-1 Team all together again in an action packed thought provoking tale full of the things that make us love this series?
Stargate - Continuum is another excellent story, different from the last movie (The Ark of Truth) but equally as interesting with complex themes, emotions, high energy action sequences and always the chemistry of the cast giving that extra sparkle to the performances.
With sequences actually filmed at the North Pole and on a nuclear submarine, the feeling of reality is intensified! Of course the props built, and the special effects blend beautifully, and the whole story is a perfect gem in the Stargate treasure box.
The opening shot over the credits is an amazing single shot sequence, traveling through Stargate Command before settling on the Team going somewhere. The Team is attending an extraction ceremony, a formal execution for the criminal Go’uld, Bal.
There is a flash-back to 1939 to set the stage for what comes next, and then back at the ceremony, people begin to disappear and chaos breaks loose resulting in death and destruction. The Team quickly dials the address of Star Gate Command, and go through the gate, only to appear in the hold of a ship.
From this point on the story takes some swings and turns that are most illuminating. To tell much more would spoil it for those of you who have not seen it yet! There are nods throughout the production to old Stargate in both story and characters.
There are also things from almost every season of the show, up to the present day, and it is great fun to see if one can identify these elements!
Stargate - Continuum is presented on single disc in widescreen format with a playing time of 98 minutes. The audio is available in English, French and Spanish, and English and Spanish subtitles.
The feature commentary with Executive Producer/Writer Brad Wright and Director Martin Wood is entertaining and informative, adding some of those bits that fans love to know!
The Making of Stargate Continuum featurette is a combination of the elements of the production and interviews. But the most interesting featurette is Stargate in the Arctic, which takes the audience to the North Pole during the filming of the ice sequences, and explains how this was accomplished through the efforts of fan and ice submarine lab director Barry Campbell.
This is an amazing bit of video, both in the film and in the special featurette! I know those of us who have never been there have no idea what the Arctic is like, and through the film and documentaries we get a clue to the beauty and the harshness of the environment and what it takes to work in such an extreme location.
The Layman’s Guide to Time Travel is great, giving first a scientific explanation of time travel and then discussing the appeal and the possibilities of such journeys.
