Eureka is the resident scientist’s favorite show on television, so there is great rejoicing in our house that Season 2 is now on DVD. It means WE can watch step by step analysis of the wonderful inventions and special effects, rewatch favorite scenes and (hallelulia) finally understand in detail some of the things that happened! Season Two is breathtaking.
We fell in love with the show during Season One, because it had a sense of humor and a science storyline that played along possible developments, maybe not now possible, but something we might see in the very near future. The Second season lives up to the promises of the first beautifully.
We were gratified at the end of Season one with marriages and babies all around, only to have the world on the edge of destruction due to one of the pairings. Someone had to go back and stop that one event. Wow, what a kick off for a new year!
Without ever feeling like the stereotype “it was all a dream” someone does go back, and things begin to change and separate and the story moves forward, but with nods here and again to the future timeline that doesn’t happen. It is great stuff.
Also if you were a Northern Exposure fan, we think this series is the natural heir to that show. There is a lot of the ironic Northwest sensibility in Eureka, and the townspeople reminds us of those who walked in and out of Dr. Fleishman’s office or Holling’s bar.
In Eureka it is Sheriff Carter’s office and Vince’s Café Diem which serves the most heavenly sounding gourmet meals, but the citizens are as quirky and fun as those of Cicely, Alaska!
Season One set up the storylines and introduced the main cast. Season two goes beyond that with in-depth adventures for almost everyone, developing sides of their characters we have not seen, and backstory that is important to the action.
We learn Eureka has a spa, only available to Global Dynamics employees, but with hot springs generated from the nuclear reactor. We also learn of some serious past mistakes made by Global, and what was done to remedy the situation.
A darker thread runs through the storylines, and we are not sure where it is leading us. It is a fun quirky town, but it does have some secrets.
Eureka Season Two is presented on three discs containing all of the episodes, plus podcasts and webcasts. Special features include the Public Service Announcements for Eureka by its leading citizens. Those are a riot.
In the web casts and the podcasts and the featurettes we have interviews with series stars who talk about Eurekas second season and its evolution. Everyone seems enthusiastic and proud about their work. The actors are allowed great input into the story and the events, which gives them a chance to work outside the written dialog and create a more complete rendering of character.
Can you tell, we LOVE this show.
