DVD Review: Waiting for God: Season Three

BBC has released Season Three of the hilarious nursing home comedy Waiting for God. While the location may seem an odd choice for humor, wonderful actors and brilliant writing show the world how much fun residents Tom and Diana are having setting Bayview Retirement Village on its ears.

The tag line says a comedy about growing old disgracefully, and I want to be just like them when I’m there!Bayview is a typical retirement home, with many of the usual residents and problems. Tom (Graham Crowder) and Diana (Stephanie Cole) refuse to let age stop them from having comfort and respect in their lives, along with anything else they want. With humor, some very critical points of elderly care are brought to the awareness of viewers. Pitted against Jane and Harvey, two of the silliest and most clueless administrators ever put in charge of anything, Diana and Tom make inroads into elderly liberation. This series was filmed in 1992, but the stories are timeless. In the true British Comedic style, they will be as fresh the fifteenth time you see them as they were the first. As one ages, the humor becomes even funnier. Tom is sweetly wandering at times, and Diana whose health is an issue, is the peppery impetus behind most of the escapades. They are a perfect pair, he relies on her brain and brass and she needs his physical ability to carry out their plans. The entertainment lies in the fact that not only do they plan these things, they are absolutely right to do so, and usually successful. There is a sense of wistfulness throughout the series, as these people know they are elderly, but they don’t think it should matter. Waiting For God Season Three is presented in a nice two disc set with all 10 episodes. The special features include the 1992 Christmas Special, and cast biographies. The running time is a little more than 290 minutes, and it is close captioned for the hearing impaired. Some of the footage is archival, so there are a few glitches here and there, with either picture or sound. Thankfully these are not enough to hamper following the storyline or lessen the enjoyment of the episode. In stories that range from helping an anxiety ridden minister conduct a funeral, relieving the “brain-numbing dullness” of their lives by applying for jobs, taking care of unruly visiting children with a strong dose of discipline, to setting the Ladies Bowling Team atwitter with a sexual affair, Tom and Diana may be the best thing Boomers will have as a survival guide for the future!
