DVD Review: Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe is a VERY GOOD movie. It is not just an excellent story, it is filled with complex and carefully constructed characters, acted to perfection by a cast who invest their emotions unflinchingly and their skills unreservedly to make it seem very real.

This is one from the makers of Notting Hill and Love Actually, and will be a film that holds up under many viewings thanks to its intelligent and careful production.

Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) receives divorce papers on an afternoon that he is due to pick up his daughter Maia (Abigail Breslin) from school. The looming divorce, and an unexpected class in human reproduction at the school spark some unusual conversation, making Will realize that Maia is growing up. When she begs him to tell her the true story of how he met her mother, he decides this is perhaps the right time. In telling the story it becomes a romantic mystery, as there are three women in Will’s life and he tells Maia that she will have to guess which one is her mom. What follows is a brilliant tale of a young and idealistic man attempting to follow his dreams and make his fortune in New York City, while also coming of age, and trying to get a grip on the whole relationship side of life. In episodes from 1992 to 2008 (illuminated by commentary and conversation between the father and daughter) we see Will’s troubles and successes, mistakes and good times. We meet Emily (Elizabeth Banks) his college sweetheart, who really does not share his political ambitions, Summer (Rachel Weisz) an up and coming journalist whose success may be the death of romance, and finally April (Isla Fisher) a free spirited philosopher, who is not afraid to tell Will when his life is on the skids. It is a wonderful blend of caring and relationship possibilities, and we are as caught up as Maia in discovering who is her Mom.

Definitely, Maybe is presented on single disc in widescreen format with a playing time of 1 hour and 52 minutes. The disc contains a wealth of bonus features which enrich the film and make the viewer appreciate even more fully how precise the work and how dedicated the cast and crew have been to making this film. Special features include deleted scenes which are great, one wishes that they could be put back into the film, as they are for the most part very human and fun. There is a featurette which is listed as being brought to you by Volkswagon called “Creating a Romance.” It gives interesting backstory and production views, as well as interviews with most of the cast. A second featurette is “The Changing Times of Definitely, Maybe, which takes a look at how the film moves the audience from 1992 to present day, and finally there is a very interesting feature commentary with director Adam Brooks and actor Ryan Reynolds.Definitely, Maybe is full of subtle jokes, lines that will make you think, story that hasn’t been told in this way before, and a fabulous performance by Kevin Kline in a character role that musn’t be missed! Buy this DVD for your collection and treat yourself to an enjoyable intelligent classy viewing experience.

Watched most of this last night. As a guy, I have high demands for my chick flicks. Something like the predictable tripe that was 27 Dresses makes me want to retreat into a self-induced coma. However, films like Love, Actually and Notting Hill were exceptionally well written. Definitely, Maybe follows in the same tradition of quality. I found alot of myself in the character portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, who as an actor, I have always been on the fence about his abilities. Not anymore. He gives a truly emotional and grounded performance here. The female leads are pitch-perfect as well. To me, Isla Fisher is a standout. You can't help but fall in love with her. I haven't finished watching yet, but I can't wait to see how it ends. It does keep one guessing.
