Monsters abound in myth and legends, but are they in some part based on creatures from our real world? The History Chanel takes a look at scientific evidence for the existence of these creatures that have generated such intriguing stories, providing a fun viewing experience and most likely lots of discussion afterwards.
Almost everyone has heard the legends surrounding Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness monster, but did you know that Lake Champlain has its own creature? That “Champ” might be the same type of prehistoric plesiosaur that seems to fit the description of “Nessie”? That its ancestors might have been cut off from the oceans as the Ice Age ended, and they adapted to fresh water environment.
And in the news lately, giant squid have been captured and brought to laboratories to be studied. Once thought to be the “enlargement” by storytelling of the deep sea dwelling aggressive Humboldt squid, these recent discoveries hint that there IS something bigger down in the darkest most remote seabed trenches.
Reports have come from the Midwestern USA for over a century concerning HUGE black birds that have the strength to carry off small children, and our deepest lakes may contain gigantic man-eating fish, while wetlands have sightings of a swamp beast and remote areas of Russia have killer ape-men. Scary? You bet it is! And riveting to watch and fun for older children and adults alike. Our world is full of mysteries of all sizes, and this Monster Quest series provides a nice blend of good scientific investigation and dramatic storytelling to enhance our sense of wonder.
Monsterquest - Complete Season 1 is presented in a four disc set, nicely packaged in a tough looking metal case as if to cage the monsters inside. Episodes from Season One include Monster Quests for “Champ”, Sasquatch, the giant squid, Birdzilla, Bigfoot, mutant canines, gigantic killer fish, swamp beast, Russia’s killer apemen, unidentified flying creatures, the real Hobbit and the American werewolf. Intrigued? Our family was, and greatly enjoyed the episodes.
A special features, behind the scenes featurette adds to the interest and knowledge of how sequences were set up and filmed. Combining all known quality evidence from studies and reports and cgi reproduction, we are able to see what scientists think these creatures may look like, if they haven’t already been caught on film.
The episodes are beautifully shot, dramatic in presentation and offer over ten hours of viewing. This would be a unique addition to any family’s “monster” or “dinosaur” collection. We are looking forward to Season Two!
Monsterquest - Complete Season 1 is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
