DVD Review: Stargate Infinity: The Complete Series

Here is something fun and exciting for Stargate fans of all ages, the complete series of the animated Stargate Infinity is now available on DVD! Shown on television in 2002 and set in the next generation of Stargate exploration, it is entertaining and full of all the things we all love about the Stargate universe.

It was a good decision to start with some fresh premises for this series, as that way comparisons are not made and there are no preconceived ideas of where the series is going. The introductory music tells the story of the Stargate and sets the scene. As it has been around thirty years since the first explorations, there are no familiar figures from past incarnations of Stargate, but there are references to their time, such as the former enemy the Goa’uld. As the series begins, the Stargate Program has long been declassified, and beings from other planets are now on Earth openly working with humans to promote a peaceful universe. Stargate command has a cadet program, training individuals for off world missions and the audience is introduced to several of these cadets watching them in a training exercise. These will be the principal characters of this show.The opening episode sets up the storyline that is carried through the series. Major Gus Bonner is on trial for sending his troops into an ambush, only Major Bonner says he did not do it. There is discussion of making decisions and taking the consequences, which Major Bonner addresses, but insists vehemently that he did not give the orders that lost so many troops. At the same time as the trial, an artifact is being examined in the lab, and a strange chrysalis is discovered to contain some form of life. The actual traitor allows the new enemy the Tlak’khan to infiltrate Stargate Command and they steal the chrysalis. Major Bonner, and a group of cadets including his niece Stacey, empath Seattle Montoya, hot shot R. J. Harrison and the half human half Tloth Ec’co, pursue the villains through the Stargate to rescue the chrysalis, which may or may not be an “Ancient.”Like all Stargate stories Stargate Infinity not only tells a good tale, but also has detailed character development, a lot of humor and excellent life lessons. The stories have episode continuity, building on what has gone before, and are carefully plotted. This show does not “talk down” to kids, but gives them a good story to follow, with some nuggets of truth to think about afterwards. There is enough action with bad guys who resemble dinosaurs in armor or blobby things with detached brains to keep the youngsters happy, while more adult audiences enjoy the jokes and the nuances of the story. The complete series of 26 episodes are presented on 4 discs with a total playing time of about 10 hours. There are special features included, an animated Stargate Effects Test, Never-Before-Seen Animated Character Walking Models, and a section of Original Concept Art. Whether you are a long-time fan of Stargate, or new to the universe, this is a nicely packaged set and very entertaining for the whole family.
