In a world gone crazy where people are constantly made redundant and forced into insurmountable debt just to live, what’s a girl to do?
Bridget (Diane Keaton) is savvy enough to figure out the answer and draft co-workers Nina (Queen Latifa) and Jackie (Katie Holmes) into a crime of necessity and extreme cleverness.
Mad Money will have you laughing and cheering at the resourcefulness of the three women who can make it work!
The film starts with the accomplices having been caught and being interviewed about the crime. As they tell the story, we see the events of three years earlier when Bridget and her husband Don (Ted Danson) are out of work, penniless and forced to sell their home. Bridget after many tries in the workforce, finally gets a job as a janitor at a facility that is responsible for destroying old worn out money.
Bridget is smart and observant, and soon realizes that the facility is a bit smug about its security. She evolves a plan that will benefit herself as well as her co-workers, Nina a single mom struggling to educate her children and Jackie a free spirited diabetic young woman.
With three such actresses as Diane Keaton, Queen Latifa and Katie Holmes, the lines are delivered with perfect comic timing and the action is frantic. Who knew that Katie Holmes would be able to meet her co-stars at their level of comic portrayal.
She sparkles as the somewhat ditzy but earnest Jackie and fits in well as part of this strange but workable team. Some of the scenes are broadly comic, while others have a delicate subtlety as to make audiences really think about what is happening.
All in all it is a good, entertaining flight of fancy, with some really funny moments and an indomitable spirit that makes one want to cheer the ladies on in their endeavors.
Mad Money is presented on single disc, in a choice of widescreen or full screen format. The running time is 103 minutes, and it is rated PG-13.
Special Features include a commentary by Director Callie Khouri, a behind the scenes featurette called Makin’ Money, and the theatrical trailer.
This film isn’t rocket science or great heists of history. It is a fun, likeable movie, with lots of laugh moments and entertaining dialog.
