On what should be the happiest day of their lives, the future of Henry (Paul Rudd) and Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) takes a bizarre turn. Kate is crushed by an ice sculpture of an angel just before the wedding, and Henry is left to go on alone.
A year later he is still grieving, so his flaky sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) takes him to a psychic in hopes of finding a way to help him get on with his life.
From Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit to the current Over Her Dead Body, the odd story of haunting by a dead spouse is a proven audience pleaser. Perhaps it is the urban legend feel of such a tale, or maybe some deeply hidden psychological fears of abandonment or inferiority to the dead loved one that makes such stories so fascinating.
What a creepy, shivery idea, that the loved ones can see EVERYTHING from beyond, and can (and want) to interfere with the living. That being said, Over Her Dead Body isn’t a chilling story at all, in fact it is pretty funny.
Kate is demanding and difficult in life, and in death her disposition has not changed one bit. Not listening to the afterlife orientation speech, she has no idea why she can still see Henry or why she can communicate with Ashley, except that it must mean she is supposed to keep them apart.
Ashley (Lake Bell) a goodhearted sometimes caterer sometimes psychic, tackles the job of helping Henry at first as a favor to his sister, but soon finds herself romantically involved. Imagine her surprise when she is visited by the dead but still feisty Kate. Confusion abounds, but in this lighthearted story, the action and dialog are never burdened by too much angst.
There is trouble, but of the kind that is reminiscent of high school girl tussles rather than any serious living versus the dead battles. In short, Over Her Dead Body is entertaining, has some really good lines, and is a lot of fun.
Over Her Dead Body is presented on single disc with option of widescreen or fullscreen viewing. The feature is 95 minutes long, and is available in English with English or Spanish subtitles. It is rated PG-13 for language and some sexual content.
If you are looking for an entertaining evening, this movie will provide you with a good story, well written, nicely performed and with lots of surprising laughs.
Over Her Dead Body is now available at Amazon . It is available for pre-order at AmazonUK for a June 9th release. Visit the DVD database for more information.
