The twisted minds behind South Park venture into the land of imagination when terrorists take over. They unleash all of the evil creatures of Imaginationland, not to mention that Cartman is pursuing Kyle because he wants him to fulfill a bet. When you hear what it is you’ll want to renege on the bet too.
Cartman claims to have seen a leprechaun. Kyle doesn’t believe him and they bet that if there is a leprechaun that Kyle will suck Cartman’s balls and if not that Cartman will give Kyle ten dollars. Seems like a winnable bet to Kyle – that is until a leprechaun skips by. The little fellow from the emerald isle warns of a terrorist attack and scampers away.
A strange man claiming to be the mayor of Imaginationland then pops up and takes the boys away to the mythical land. While there the terrorists do attack and hijack our Imaginations. The boys escape and awake the next morning thinking they had the same dream, until they realize that they left Butters behind.
The terrorists use a bomb to unleash all the evil creatures of Imaginationland and soon the place is in chaos and the U.S. government is planning on nuking our imaginations.
The title Imaginationland is a bit deceptive but it’s mainly because if they called it what they say on the start of the episodes I doubt that it could sit on video store shelves. The epic is really called “Kyle Sucks Cartman’s Balls: The Trilogy.”
The episode was aired over three parts on Comedy Central and was a ratings winner. The show has the sly, biting, dark humor of the show and it’s a grand exercise for folks of my generation to spot the various good guys and bad guys. The nice folk of Imaginationland include folks like H.R. Puff-n-stuff and a cadre of villains that is fun to spot.
Not only do characters from movies and television show up but some beasts that sprang from the imagination of the characters on the show. So we also have Manbearpig (and equally imaginary character Al Gore hot in pursuit of the elusive beast) and the satanic Woodland Creatures. What a hoot!
I suppose that the show is an acquired taste since the humor is pretty raw (as you’d expect from something called “Kyle sucks Cartman’s balls”), but the adventuresome will find something to laugh at.
Imaginationland is presented in fullscreen as it was aired on television and this is the uncut/uncensored version. Special features include a commentary by show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and around 4 minutes of storyboards. What’s nice is that they also include the Woodland Critter Christmas and Manbearpig episodes.
Imaginationland is not from the mind of Willy Wonka, well maybe if he was on crack, but from the deranged minds of Matt and Trey.
My sense of humor tends towards the dark so I found it hilarious. If you don’t like the show then you’ll hate this one, but it was also fun spotting all the fictional characters that they pepper the episode with.
South Park - Imaginationland is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
