Ancient Rome holds a fascination that does not diminish. The modern world owes much to this great civilization, and the important aspects of its skills in engineering and city planning are chronicled in this excellent program.
Produced for the History Channel, this is a multiple Emmy-award winning show designed to please engineers, historians and all those who enjoy knowing more about ancient times. Host Peter Weller presents the development of the city of Rome as a measure of the Empire’s rise and fall. Beginning in 55 BC with the reign of Julius Caesar, the city’s history is linked with that of each Emperor, until the collapse in 537AD. Because of this connection, the rulers were able to make a personal mark on the city’s development.
Some of these marks are grand and glorious achievements, while others are not. Some even have questionable motives and little or no value to the city as a whole. Good and bad, it is an exciting, entertaining journey through the history of Ancient Rome. This well written and beautifully filmed documentary is 94 minutes in running time. Included on the DVD is a making of featurette which has a wealth of additional production information. With a combination of location shots and CGI interpretation, the history of Rome is brought to life in vivid and memorable vignettes.
It is eye opening and amazing, and a wonderful way to learn history. If you think ancient Rome was only Julius Caesar, Nero and some gladiators, this beautifully crafted show will not only be interesting, it will be enlightening.
The History Channel Presents Rome - Engineering an Empire is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
