A true concert event as three elder statesmen of country music perform for an enthusiastic crowd. They’re truly the last of the breed, as folks like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings have left the world, but they still know how to charm a crowd.
A trio of country music legends takes the stage and still has the stuff that made them famous. They’ve been touring and this filmed concert marks the end of the tour. The 81-year-old Ray Price is the eldest of the group, but he still has the pipes to croon “For the Good Times.”
The 70-year-old Merle Haggard takes the stage next and the “Okie from Muskogee” still wows the crowd. The 74-year-old Willie Nelson joins him and they perform a few of their hits together. Before the show is over all three of these Country Hall of Famers come onstage to perform the big finale.
They perform 35 songs including Always on my Mind, Crazy, For the Good Times, Make the World Go Away, Mama Tried, Night Life, Okie from Muskogee, On the Road Again, Pancho and Lefty, Ramblin’ Fever, Route 66, San Antonio Rose, Silver Wings, Sing Me Back Home, Take Me Back to Tulsa, That’s the Way Love Goes, and Whiskey River. The show is truly an event of epic proportions as the talent coming from those three on the stage is enormous.
The performers are also joined by Ray Benson, Asleep at the Wheel, and Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys. The concert is a goldmine for fans of classic country music and fans of any of the legends on the stage. They still know how to work a crowd even if you can’t hear any of their music on country radio these days. Nelson even performs a couple of songs that he’s written on the tour.
It’s truly an excellent concert and it’s grand to see these troopers give it their all on the stage. It’s a once in a lifetime event.
Last of the Breed in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. The audio is in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround. The concert is a great event and one that more than likely will never come again. It’s excellent that this concert was captured on DVD so that we can revel in the glory that Price, Haggard, and Nelson bring to the stage.
