This year two shows about behind the scenes at a television series debuted on NBC. Both were well written, highly entertaining and fun to watch. Studio 60 was a drama and 30 Rock is a comedy. Probably somewhere in between these two lies the truth about what happens in the business. 30 Rock written, produced and stared in by Tina Fey has earned 10 Emmy Primetime nominations and quite a bit of critical acclaim. It is a very funny show. Tina Fey plays Liz Lemon the head writer of a live variety program in New York City. Her world is suddenly changed when Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) arrives as the new Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Engineering.
Jack is full of great ideas and plans to increase the popularity of the show and to interfere in all the lives of the production crew. The addition of Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) who has wild ideas of his own to keep his street cred as well as be the star of the show make Liz’s job that much crazier.
This is a slick and funny show, with great dialog and timely topics. From management to pages, everyone at 30 Rock is a character, recognizable, sympathetic or over-the –top astonishing. This is the type of show where fans are already choosing favorite episodes, quoting characters and reliving specific moments.
Words, or situations from the show are already creeping into everyday conversations, which indicates the popularity of 30 Rock. For example, people in one office use the term “beeper king” to refer to someone whose ideas are less than fresh, and “rat king” to describe a terrible mess, and there is some talk of who needs to be mentored.
The 30 Rock - Season 1 is a three disc set of all episodes, attractively packaged in a three fold box insert. There is approximately 7 hours and 37 minutes of play and all episodes contain English subtitles. Bonus Features include, Audio Commentary by Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer. Deleted Scenes. The Wrap Party Video including Bloopers. An Evening with Kenneth Shorts. Behind the scenes Featurettes and Makin’ It Happen Shorts.
If you are a fan of 30 Rock, this is a great set to own, if you have never seen the show, this is a fine introduction to clever writing, well produced and excellently cast production.
30 Rock – Season One is now available at Amazon . As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
