The Muppets return to DVD in this second season of their hilarious antics that feature a fine roster of famous guest stars. Some of the stars are not as well know today as they were then, but its still a pleasure to see them.
The Muppet Show features the hilarious hijinks of Kermit the Frog and company as the put on a show, with each episode featuring a performance by a famous guest star.
Disc 1: Guest stars: Don Knotts, Zero Mostel, Milton Berle, Rich Little, Judy Collins, and Nancy Walker.
Disc 2: Guest stars: Edgar Bergen, Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, George Burns, Dom DeLuise, Bernadette Peters, and Rudolf Nureyev.
Disc 3: Guest stars: Elton John, Lou Rawls, Cleo Laine, Julie Andrews, Jaye P. Morgan, and Peter Sellers.
Disc 4: Guest stars: Petula Clark, Bob Hope, Teresa Brewer, John Cleese, and Cloris Leachman.
Some of those stars need no introduction but I had to Google Jaye P. Morgan, Cleo Laine, and Teresa Brewer. However, the real stars of the show are always the creations of Jim Henson. They have a timeless quality to them and its fun to see old friends again.
It’s also sad to recall that Mr. Henson is no longer with us and was taken from us too soon. The star usually performs a song, sketch, or both with the Muppets and it’s grand to see Bob Hope, John Cleese, et al make funny with them.
The Muppet Show is presented in fullscreen as they were aired on television. Special features are located on disc 4. The rare “Muppet Valentine Show” runs 25 minutes and aired on ABC in 1974 with guest star Mia Farrow. “The Muppets on the Muppets” feature 12 minutes of interviews as the creatures sit down and answer a variety of questions. The band Weezer performs the 4-minute music video “Keep Fishin” as if they were guests on the Muppet Show.
It’s great to see the show again and season two only keeps up the good vibes. It’s also wonderful to see the quest stars and an even greater treat to see the rare Valentine’s show. This is what we call the Muppet Show!
