Like visiting with old friends, watching Will & Grace - Season Six, allows one to relive good, hilarious, or emotional times, laughing or weeping and not feeling the least bit stupid. This particular season ran the gamut from misty-eyed sweetness to totally over-the-top insanity, and was highly entertaining all the way. Also, like the golden classics of television “I Love Lucy” and “The Andy Griffith Show,” and the modern classic “Seinfield,” every person has their favorite episode or moment in this series. For this season, my favorite is the story arc with Will’s (Eric McCormack) mother, Marilyn Truman (played to perfection by Blythe Danner) as she is pulled out of self-pity and back into life by staying with Will.
Who knew “Mama Mia” would have so much power?! Of course there are other stories, or bits that come to mind with their own special emphasis, such as Grace’s (Debra Messing) dinner party for Leo’s (Harry Connick, Jr.) old girlfriend (played by Mira Sorvino,) or Jack (Sean Hayes) teaching James Earl Jones how to act! Who could forget John Cleese’s wild performance (he was nominated for an Emmy) as Lyle Finster, the father of Karen’s ex rival Lorraine (Minnie Driver), and the dingy romance he develops with Karen (Megan Mullally.)
This season, like the others before, is adult comedy. It is delivered in a variety of styles from very broad to the intensely sophisticated, from simple silliness to unequivocal darkness, but is just the thing to change one’s mood after a difficult day at work. Grace is not present in several episodes, as she was expecting, but this did not hurt the entertainment value of the season.
There are wonderful episodes featuring the other cast members and some interesting story lines. Romance and new beginnings abound, as Will finds someone, and Jack opts for a new career, Karen discovers love, and finally Will and Grace open a new business together.
Will & Grace - Season Six is a four disc set containing all the episodes and some fun special features. The outtake reel is a hoot, as the cast is having such a great time! There are also “themed featurettes” which give the last word on things such as “Fashion.” The series DVDs are presented in 4x3 with interactive menus. Disk 1: 1. Dames at Sea 2.
