That there is little to no reference to the original Walking Tall movies: maybe, but frankly - who cares?
The movie in question can very well stand, tall and otherwise, on its own two feet.
The acting is solid to very good, the referred to rape scene, violence and bad language - oh please, I've seen worse on children's programmes, the visual language is actually extremely well balanced (occasionaly even beautiful)and even the sound track is quite decent (if you like country, which I don't, but that's a different matter altogether).
You don't like remakes and sequels? Well, this one is neither, really, as already pointed out. If I have to choose between a stupid title/well told story and stupidly told story/grand title... I'd stick with the stupid title option.
You don't like Kevin Sorbo? Well, deal with it. He is the closest thing to coolness Americans have come up in a long, long time (and the fact that Bob Mitchum's son is also in the movie makes me even more painfully aware of this).
Besides: if you're into method acting and de Niro-like hysteria... well then how did you manage to end up with this kind of movie anyway? If that's what you expected from it - being a movie critic and everything - a word of friendly advice: don't quit your day job!
