The Teen Titans return for this special original movie where they find themselves on foreign soil battling a mythical villain in Tokyo. This feature length film (75 minutes) takes place between the fourth and fifth seasons of the Teen Titans television show. The Teen Titans compose an elite group of five heroes Robin (Scott Menville), Starfire (Hynden Walch), Raven (Tara Strong), Cyborg (Khary Payton), and Beast Boy (Greg Cipes).
A mysterious costumed ninja named Saico-Tek attacks the Teen Titan’s city and Titan Tower. They capture and defeat him, but he gives them evidence leading back to Tokyo and a mysterious super-villain called Brushogun. They travel to Tokyo but the local police, the Tokyo Super Troopers, think that the Titans are not needed. The leader of the group tells them that Brushogun is a mythical figure and does not exist.
Robin battles Saico-Tek
The super force appears to have everything under control so the Titans go on a well deserved vacation and scout out the sights and sounds of Tokyo. However, Brushogun turns out to be not so mythical after all and has his sights set on the Titans. The movie has a familiar plot for fans of the show and even has some familiar situations for the characters (Beast Boy’s chasing girls, Cyborg overeating, Robin seemingly in trouble, etc.). What fans will be delighted at is the plot involving Raven and Robin’s romance. The show does have the interesting gimmick of being set in Japan and the cultural trappings associated with that city. We even get to see some references to popular culture with Saico-Tek’s resemblance to a power ranger, the Titans battling a Godzilla-look-alike, the J-Horror type creatures that attack Raven, Iron chefs attacking Cyborg, and many more that will make those familiar with them have a grin on their face. It’s just fun and fans of the Titans will be glad to have this mini-adventure on DVD.
Trouble in Tokyo is presented in fullscreen. Special features include the 12 minute “The Lost Episode” that has the Titans battling Punk Rocket wrecking a concert. I think that title has more to do with the various hearing loss jokes and not that the episode was exactly “lost.” “Robin’s Underworld Race Challenge” is a DVD player game that has you control Robin as he races through Tokyo. There are also some trailers for other WB DVDs. Trouble in Tokyo is a fun film that will be appreciated by fans of the full series. It will be a welcome addition to those fan’s DVD libraries and eagerly sought by them for the romantic aspects between Robin and Starfire. There are also some more great character moments for each of our main characters. The kids will enjoy it even if they’re not too familiar with the series.
