Torvill & Dean show why they are the royalty of ice dancing
The atmospheric Stormy was only performed while touring with a Ukrainian show, while Missing comes from one their own shows. Until I saw this compilation, I would never have dreamed anyone could tap dance on the ice - but Torvill & Dean succeed with Ginger & Fred - based on the work of Fred Astairs and Ginger Rogers.
The most famous threesome of their competitive days: Mack & Mabel, Barnum and the incomparable Bolero are featured prominently. Before each dance, Torvill & Dean do a short introduction explaining how the dance came about, their thinking at the time and highlighting some of the idiosyncratic T&D moves such as the train and their take on the Charleston.
The Paso Doble in which Torvill acts as the cape to Dean's matador is brilliant with scenes of Dean positively strutting pulling his cape along; ending with Torvill being thrown to the ground like a throwaway cape. The lyrical Flying Fish showing Torvill flying through the air for the first time should not be missed.
Incredibly atmospheric with shadowy figures flitting in and around the duo, Torvill is spun, floats and dances high in the air; landing perfectly each time to continue a seamless performance on the ice. In Yo Yo Ma Sarabande, T&D were invited to work with Yo Yo Ma. They admit the repetitive music was initially hard to dance to but eventually based it on the purity of the movement.
This has to be a “must have” Christmas present for anyone keen on ice dancing. All the dances show just how they have always stretched the limits of ice dancing to its utmost. The sheer skill, artistry and imagination of the two skaters is pure genius.
Torvill & Dean - Golden Moments is now available at AmazonUK. As of yet, there is not a U.S. release date. Visit the DVD database for more information.
