DVD Review: Larry the Cable Guy - Health Inspector

Larry the Cable Guy gets his own movie where in a stretch he plays a guy named Larry - a bumbling redneck health inspector. Well, maybe it’s not too much of a stretch.Larry (Larry the Cable Guy) is a health inspector who is saddled with a straight-laced, by the book partner named Amy Butlin (Iris Bahr). Bart Tatlock (Tom Wilson) is Larry’s boss and is looking for ways to get rid of Larry. Jack Dabbs (Tony Hale) is Larry’s paralyzed co-worker who is perennially pissed off and has gotten the promotion that Larry felt he deserved – to the five star restaurant beat. Larry has the hots for Jane (Megyn Price) who he gets fired from her job in the mall. One night when Larry is on call, he gets notice that one of the city’s five star restaurants has had an outbreak of food poisoning. Turns out Jane has gotten a waitress job at the same restaurant and Larry also suspects that the food poisoning was intentional. Mayor Gunn (Joe Pantoliano) insists that Larry be put on the five star restaurant cases. The All City big restaurant competition is coming up (think Iron Chef) and with the rash of food poisonings only two restaurants remain in the competition. Lily Micelli’s (Joanna Cassidy) restaurant and Big Shug’s (Bruce Bruce) restaurant are the only two left. Lily Micelli’s hideous sister Brenda (Brooke Dillman of Blue Collar TV) is lurking around the edges, could she be somehow involved in the outbreak of poisonings?

I’ve watched and been a fan of the Blue Collar comedy boys (Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron White, and Larry). This time Larry breaks away from the “redneck pack” and gets a movie of his own. I suppose that Larry is a funny enough guy in his standup routine (if you appreciate his brand of redneck humor), but he isn’t enough to carry a movie on his own. Standup is one thing, but being the star of a movie is another. He seems to have done better with his vocal work in Cars. The movie relies too heavily on fart jokes that aren’t particularly funny. The movie has enough to offend everyone since it skewers the retarded, handicapped, and a number of other groups. The problem is that the movie is not funny. You sit there waiting for something funny to happen and the only time I laughed really hard was a toilet gag that was stolen from Dumb and Dumber. Health Inspector is presented in fullscreen and anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features include the 8 minute “Larry the Cable Guy: Heath Inspector: Behind the Badge” making of featurette. It has interviews with Larry the Cable Guy, Iris Bahr, Tom Wilson, director Trent Cooper, Megyn Price, Lisa Lampanelli (Jane’s mom in the movie), producer J. P. Williams, producer Alan Blomquist, Joe Pantoliano, Tony Hale, and Joanna Cassidy. There are also previews for Reno 911: Season 3 and Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One for the Road.

Larry the Cable Guy can be pretty funny in his standup, but I didn’t find this movie very funny at all. I’m sure that fans of Larry and Blue Collar humor will want to check it out but I’m of the opinion that they’re going to be disappointed.
