DVD Review: Pink Floyd - Pulse

The Pink Floyd Concert video finally comes to DVD. From my understanding it was released on VHS in 1995 and has now finally been released to DVD in 2006.Pink Floyd the band has been around since the 1960s though it has changed band members. Currently (or I should say as of 1994 when Pulse was recorded) Pink Floyd is David Gilmour on guitars and vocals, Nick Mason on drums, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. Pink Floyd is known for its elaborate stage shows and using strange imagery as well as their musical performances during them, making them both and audio and video experience. The Pulse concert on this disc was recorded October 20, 1994 at Earls Court in London. Pink Floyd is backed up by Sam Brown on background vocals, Jon Carin on keyboards, Claudia Fontaine on backing vocals, Dick Parry on saxophone, Guy Pratt on bass guitar, Tim Renwick on guitar, and Gary Wallis on percussion. The concert is divided into two parts over two discs totaling 145 minutes. Part one consists of the songs ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Concert Version)’, ‘Learning to Fly’, ‘High Hopes’, ‘Take It Back’, ‘Coming Back to Life’, ‘Sorrow’, ‘Keep Talking’, ‘Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’, and ‘One of These Days.’ Part two consists of songs from the album “Dark Side of the Moon.” The songs are ‘Speak to Me’, “Breathe in the Air’, ‘On the Run’, ‘Time’, ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’, ‘Money’, ‘Us and Them’, ‘Any Colour You Like’, ‘Brain Damage’, and ‘Eclipse.’ There are also three encores of ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘Comfortably Numb’, and ‘Run Like Hell.’ You have the option to listen to the songs individually as well as watching each part of the concert.

Pulse is presented in fullscreen and has three audio options. You can listen to it in Dolby Digital 5.1/448 kbps, Dolby Digital 5.1/640 kbps, or Stereo. Special features are numerous and spread over the two disc set. Disc one includes a collection of the screen films that are shown during the concert (Shine on You Crazy Diamond, High Hopes, and Learning to Fly). This is a nice touch since you can’t always get a quality view of the films during the concert. There is also a section called Bootlegging the Bootleggers that appears to be bootleg tapes of several songs (What Do You Want from Me?, On The Turing Away, Poles Apart, and Marooned) and is shot in the traditional bootleg shaky cam. Next are two music videos for ‘Learning to Fly’ and ‘Take It Back.’ Tour Stuff has maps, itineraries, and stage plans (sketches and formal plans) for their 1994 tour. Finally there’s the 1 minute TV ad for the Pulse CD. Disc two also has a set of screen films (Speak to Me, On the Run, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Money, Us and Them, Brain Damage, and Eclipse) as well as a set of alternate versions (Speak to Me, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Money, and Us and Them). Next is the 15 minute “Say Goodbye to Life as We know It” which is behind the scene footage of the concert. There is also the 10 minute “Wish You Were Here with Billy Corgan.” This is from Pink Floyd’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has Smashing Pumpkins’ Corgan introducing Pink Floyd as well as performing with them. Next is a Cover Art Gallery which as art from the albums Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell, and Pulse. Finally there is a section of credits for the concert. The near ten year wait is over as Pink Floyd’s fans can now purchase the concert film that was previously only available on videotape. I’d have to say that it was worth the wait and I greatly enjoyed “attending” the concert. Money!

Review of Pink FLoyd's new DVD, Pulse . It would have been nice to have a reviewer who knew something about Pink Floyd. Most if not all of his review consists of reading the back of the DVD package - Hey guess what, I can read too - Just have to load up Amazon and read the info -

The Pulse concert was also available in Laser Disc formatt, released by Columbia Music Video (M2V 50121) in two Laser Discs with contents on three sides running for two hours twenty four minutes.

My comments regarding the changing band members was done for the sake of brevity. Plus if you go and actually look at the back of the DVD box it is basically just a song listing, which my review is definately more than that. I review a large amount of DVDs which compromise various subjects. If we were to try and experts to review each title then we'd probably never get anything reviewed.

I was esentially referring to the VHS release when I said that. Forgot about the LD (even though I still have a stack of them in the bedroom, though not this one ;) ). Mea culpa.

In Jeff's defense, the studios do like us to include a brief synopsis of the DVD which most of the times is basically the information on the back of the cover. This is also done to give the reader a basic idea of what the DVD is about. The reviewer then can go into more detail as he feels fit in his review. Also, as Jeff stated, our writers handle a wide variety of films and sometimes have to review titles they are not 100 percent familiar with (as often seen when we review a season two or four of a TV series box set. This is done because we are always trying to give our readers the most reviews each month as we can. While we try to put as much information as we can in a review, sometimes it is not enough for the more knowledgeable reader. As always, thanks for reading!
