I was one of those people who the movie fell flat on. It takes too long to get to the “horror” and, like Hostel, you just don’t care about the characters. The victims are just too plain stupid for falling into the situation, and the killer seems to be too comical to provide any real scares. It does manage to have several disturbing moments, but it is too little too late. The movie does seem to borrow on what has worked for past horror films – a documentary feel of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I think it would have been better if they shortened the time spent getting to Wolf Creek Crater, and maybe made the killer a bit more menacing instead of an almost horror imitation of that other famous Outback hero named Mick.
I suppose it's never a good idea to go into a movie when you're intoxicated(just as I did when seeing this one) because the scary flicks are just never as scary when you're laughing impulsively at things like the way the character runs, or the way old Mick laughs evily. I'm not sure if I would have had a different opinion if I'd been in a sober state of mind, but I don't really have the desire to find out:
I didn't really think it took too long to get into the horror. Because it seems to be what's going to happen naturally, I will compare this one to Hostel a bit: Hostel took much too long for my liking to get into the actual horror of the film. It spent too much time showing the 'great tits' of all the European women in the hosetls. Wolf Creek did a better job getting straight to the action.
I originally didn't really like this film, but after reading this review have some sort of new-found respect for it. It did it's job at being the creepy documentary, and was very true to documentary form. I liked the fact that the girl you thought would get away at the end just barely didn't. You didn't expect it. At the time, I was actually pissed off.
I probably would have liked it just a little bit more if Mick would have caught up with the Australian and one of the chicks could have lived. Why does my gender alawys have to be so weak? Haha.
