FIVE MASTERPIECES FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST GERMAN FILMMAKERS OF ALL TIME

Building on the critical and commercial success of the six-disc "Herzog/Kinski" DVD boxed set released in March 2004, Anchor Bay UK is soon to release a second Herzog DVD collection, the five-disc WERNER HERZOG BOXED SET.

This new collection features five of Herzog's films that, in their own respective manner, manage to blur the line between "fiction" and "documentary" ETHE ENIGMA OF KASPAR HAUSER, EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL, FATA MORGANA, HEART OF GLASS and STROSZEK.

Arguably one of the greatest German filmmakers of all time, writer-director-producer Werner Herzog began his film career as one of the leading lights of German new-wave cinema before becoming an internationally renowned director thanks to the success of films such as "Aguirre, The Wrath Of God" and "The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser". The winner of countless national and international film awards, including the Best Director award at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival for "Fitzcarraldo", Herzog is notable for being one of the most fearless and visionary filmmakers of all time.

Based on the true and mysterious story of the eponymous hero, THE ENIGMA OF KASPAR HAUSER concerns a young man (played by Bruno S) who appears, seemingly out of nowhere, in 1828 Nuremberg barely able to walk or speak. The only clue to his origin is a strange note he carries with him. Herzog's take on the poignant, often funny and unforgettable "enigma of the century" is a haunting masterpiece.

With a cast composed entirely of dwarfs, EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL tells a tale of inmates taking over the asylum. A deceptively simple allegory about the consequences of imprisonment and rebellion, this brutal, compassionate and uncompromising film builds with amazing power from beginning to end.

Recognised as a masterpiece of documentary filmmaking FATA MORGANA is a visually breathtaking meditation on life, death, history and man's less-than-central role in the universe. Shot in the Sahara desert during breaks in the filming of "The Flying Doctors Of East Africa", his short TV film for National Geographic, FATA MORGANA is a radical and mesmerising work of beauty.

Perhaps most notable for the fact that all but one of the cast perform quite literally under the hypnotic spell of the director himself, HEART OF GLASS is one of Werner Herzog's most stylized and challenging films. When the owner of the local glass factory passes away without divulging the secret formula for making a magical ruby glass, the residents of a 19th Century Bavarian Village find their community falling apart as they are gripped by superstition and madness. Desperate for help, the villagers turn to a local prophet, but his visions predict only further collapse and apocalyptic doom.

STROSZEK is a bizarre tragicomedy featuring a unique cast and one of the most unforgettable endings in the history of cinema. Recently released prison convict Bruno Stroszek (Bruno S), his neighbour Mr. Schietz (Clemens Schietz) and their prostitute friend Eva (Eva Mattes) move from Germany to Railroad Flats, Wisconsin, USA hoping to begin new lives in the land of opportunity. But when they find themselves living in a mobile home in the winter-bound prairie of Wisconsin, they soon discover the American dream can also be a living nightmare.

The five-disc WERNER HERZOG BOXED SET (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (29.99) by Anchor Bay UK on 22nd August 2005.
