The first release on Anchor Bay UK's new Dark Asia label, THE COMMITMENT is a brand new, stylish and atmospheric supernatural chiller from Thailand, directed by Montri Kong-im and starring Prangthong Changthom (The Unborn). This eagerly awaited debut release from Dark Asia firmly establishes the label as a leading force in bringing new, high quality horror productions direct from Asia to the UK.
Set in the suburbs of present day Bangkok, THE COMMITMENT concerns a group of teenage girls, recent high school graduates, about to embark on a terrifying journey into the unknown. Rather than face failure in their entrance exams to university, the girls visit a shrine at a local abandoned haunted house where, it is believed, one can pledge a gift to the resident spirit in exchange for wishes being granted. Unknown to the girls, several of whom are sceptical of the endeavor, the house is inhabited by a vengeful spirit determined to collect on all payments promised. By far the most sceptical is Moss (Prangthong Changthom), who makes a mockingly half-hearted but fateful pledge on behalf of her two best friends, Muay (Pinsuda Tanphairoh) and Pin (Viritipa Pakdeeprasong). It is an offering they cannot possibly pay without facing dire, and in some cases fatal, consequences.
Applying the Asian style of movies like "The Grudge" to the more familiar Hollywood horror conventions of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" and "Final Destination", THE COMMITMENT effectively combines all the elements of the classic ghost story with those of the more visceral face of modern day horror. Definitely not one for the squeamish, THE COMMITMENT is a terrifying teen horror movie with an inventive Eastern twist.
THE COMMITMENT (cert. 18) will be released on DVD (£16.99) by Anchor Bay UK's Dark Asia label on 22nd August 2005. Special Features include widescreen presentation, interviews with director Montri Kong-im and stars Viritipa Pakdeeprasong (Pin), Pinsuda Tanphairoh (Muay) and Prangthong Changthom (Moss), trailer, stereo 2.0, optional 5.1 and DTS.
