LARS VON TRIER’S E-TRILOGY:
ELEMENT OF CRIME/ EPIDEMIC/ EUROPA

Lars Von Trier is regarded as one of today’s great auteurs of world cinema. His reputation has been built on often controversial even experimental films such as The Idiots, Dancer In The Dark, and Dogville, movies that divide his audiences.  However, he found his unique voice with thre early projects which have come to be known as the E-Trilogy - Element of Crime, the never previously released Epidemic, and Europa, dramas concerned with nature of identity. For the first time, Tartan presents them a special 4-disc collector’s boxset, containing a wealth of behind-the-scenes material and a fourth disc jam-packed with bonus features, including two shorts films.

ELEMENT OF CRIME (1984):
With shades of Tarkovsky’s Stalker and Blade Runner, this dark futuristic tale of a decaying Europe follows  police detective Fisher (Michael Elphick) as he tries to solve a series of murders of small girls. His investigations lead him in the footsteps of the killer himself. Awash with cinematic allusions, it’s a visual treat and a dynamic feature debut.

Original documentary on Von Trier;  Newly created documentary of cast anecdotes
Exclusive easter egg: Von Trier’s short film, Nocturne (1980)
Commentary #1 with Von Trier, director of photography, Tom Elling and editor Tomas Gislason
Commentary #2  with expert Peter Schepelern and author Stig Bjørkman

EPIDEMIC (1987):   **never previously available in the UK**
Resulting from a bet he made with the Danish Film Institute that he could make a film for one million Danish kroner, Epidemic has the satirical touch of a director and his writer trying to complete a project in less than a week, and an allegory based around a doctor (Von Trier himself) desperately trying to stop the spread of plague.  Shot without a camera crew, its experimental craftsmanship echoes his later Dogme projects including Dogville and Mandalay.

Newly created ‘Making of’ documentary
Exclusive easter egg:  short film, Befrielsesbilleder (1982)
Commentary with Von Trier and Niels Vørsel

EUROPA  (1991):
Combining black &white and colour photography, this powerful, sometimes dreamlike, drama follows the progress of the idealistic Leo (Jean-Marc Barr), who returns to Germany after the Second World War and finds a job on the railways and falls in with a Nazi Youth group.  He falls for the daughter of the railroad company’s Jewish owner (Julie Delphy) but is caught in a web of intrigue and deceit. Released in US as Zentropa.

Newly created ‘Making of’ documentary; Documentary of anecdotes from cast and crew
Commentary #1 by Von Trier and cast members Jean Marc-Barr and Udo Kier
Commentary #2 by Von Trier and producer Peter Aalsbaek

Exclusive disc four extras:
Von Trier in conversation with journalist Bo Green Jensen; Europa featurettes
Original TV documentaries from Denmark, France, and Germany; trailers
Documentaries on Tom Elling (storyboarding Element of Crime) and Joachin Holbek (Europa composer)
