I VITELLONI and JULIET OF THE SPIRITS

Now, again courtesy of Nouveaux Pictures, two more of Fellini's finest works, I VITELLONI and JULIET OF THE SPIRITS, are being made available on DVD for the first time in the UK, fully remastered from newly restored prints.
The winner of the prestigious Silver Lion Award at the 1953 Venice Film Festival, I VITELLONI is a brilliant and sharp observation of Italian social life in the 1950's. The title, literally translated as "the young calves", refers to a group of five young men who have grown up together in a small provincial town on the Adriatic. The film charts their respective rites of passage and how discontentment and restlessness lead them into a variety of activities, not all of them admirable. They spend their days in cafés and bars, playing pool, sponging money from their parents and generally misbehaving, forever dreaming of one day escaping their small town. But a series of events forces them all to re-evaluate their lives.
JULIET OF THE SPIRITS was Fellini's first full-length colour feature and positively revels in the stunning imagery for which he has become most noted.
While her husband is unfaithful, bored housewife Juliet (played by Fellini's real-life wife, Giulietta Masina), in an effort to perk up her life, consults clairvoyants and mediums, a pastime that leads her to various sensual pleasures as she drifts away into her own fantasy world.
The images that Fellini conjures up in JULIET OF THE SPIRITS are beautifully dazzling and have an almost hypnotic effect on the viewer. Powerfully assisted by brilliant cinematography and inventive set designs, it is unmistakeably Fellini and unmissable. The film is the winner of numerous international cinema awards including a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
