WILL YOU ESCAPE YOUR PRESENT GHOSTS OR PAST MEMORIES?
INNER SENSES
Yen, a college student, has the apparent ability to see ghosts. When she moves into her new apartment, it all become too much and she turns for help to Jim, who’s both a doctor and her professor. He cures her and as a result, their professional relationship develops into a fill-blown romance. However, once they start living together, Jim begins sleepwalking, a result of ghosts from his own past that now need exorcising. But are they real spirits of the dead or wild figments a disturbed psyche?
Directed by Chi-Leung Law, INNER SENSES, Hong Kong’s answer to The Sixth Sense, features the last starring role of Leslie Cheung (Farewell My Concubine; Happy Together). Released in Hong Kong two years after his suicide, his touching performance as Jim Law is a fitting tribute to his colourful career even if the eerie plot parallels with his own tragic death seem to haunt the film itself. Spooky indeed, but this atmospheric chiller. also stars newcomer Karena Lam (Koma;
Heroic Duo ) Infused with a wealth of horror and suspenseful cinematic tricks, it foreshadows the Pang Brothers’ The Eye whilst paying homage to the current chill master of Japan, Hideo Nakata. Watch it and you could be one step closer to believing in ghosts.
