TORREMOLINOS 73 Starring Javier Camara (Bad Education)
1973. The final years of Franco’s rule in Spain. Travelling encyclopaedia salesman, Alfredo, is in fear of losing a job unless he learns to diversify into selling erotic movies. The catch is that he has to make them himself. After consulting his wife, Carmen, they create a whole series of top-selling amateur films for the Scandinavian World Cinema of Reproduction collection. Not only does it turn Carmen into an international sex symbol, but also sets alight Alfredo’s burning film-making ambition to emulate his hero, Ingmar Bergman.
Pablo Berger’s TORREMOLINOS 73 is an engagingly eccentric comedy which evokes a kitsch affection for the 70s era in this continental Carry On Boogie Nights. It’s an assured debut feature with a director in love with both his subject and his characters. It helps he is ably assisted by two of Spain’s popular character actors, and favourites of Almodóvar. Javier Cámara appears in both Bad Education and Talk To Her, as well as Sex and Lucia, whilst Candela Peňa can be seen in All About My Mother., but together they have created a sympathetic couple, deeply in love but also hoping to fulfil their personal dreams too.
Whilst the film is the set at the time of one Franco, the dictator General Franco who died in 1975, Berger also pays tribute to another, one of his personal favourite directors, the prolific Jess Franco. Sure to inspire a little vida loca next time the camcorders rolls.
