PALINDROMES (15) A film by Todd Solondz
Aviva is a 12-year old girl who wants to get pregnant. Despite all her attempts, her parents intervene. She runs away from home in search of that elusive moment of love happiness and gets lost in an eerily hyper-real world populated by a lecherous truckdriver, a religious matriarch and her brood of disabled children.
Todd Solondz, like David Lynch, has become a filmmaker with a uniquely unconventional vision. Strongly appreciated on the international festival circuit, audiences too have followed his often dark, eccentric view of life in Welcome To The Dollhouse and Happiness. Having never been one to shy away from controversy, PALINDROMES adds to this reputation, taking on current incendiary social issues of abortion and born-again Christianity, whilst raising arguments from both liberal and conservative perspectives. More intriguing, he employs 8 people ranging in age, ethnicity and sexes boy - to play his lead character, Aviva. Solondz defines her as caught between two worlds – “suspended between one family that kills one way and another one that kills another way. Or between one family that offers no choice, and another one for whom all choice have already been made”.
With Ellen Barkin and Jennifer Jason Leigh amongst the extraordinary ensemble cast, PALINDRONES plants a few nightmares into the perfect American dream, creating a disturbing, evocative fable for our troubled times.
Please note: In accordance to the specific wishes of director Todd Solondz, no extras are included. However, this mazimizes the quality of both sound and vision.
