MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM’S ‘9 SONGS’
OUT TO RENT AND BUY ON DVD FROM JUNE 27TH
9 Songs is a modern-day love story directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland, 24 Hour Party People, Code 46) that features some of the best bands in music today. One of the most talked about films of the year so far, 9 Songs will be available on DVD complete with interview footage, deleted scenes and audio commentary from June 27th.
Featuring Kieran O’Brien (24 Hour Party People, My Kingdom) and Margo Stilley (in her acting debut), 9 Songs takes place in London in the autumn of 2003. Lisa (Stilley) is an American studying in London for a year when Matt (O’Brien) meets her at a rock concert at the Brixton Academy. From the moment they fall in love, the film follows the progress of their relationship, as well as seeing songs from each of the concerts they go to together: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman. In between the music and the bands we see Matt and Lisa making love and it is through their lovemaking that their relationship unfolds.
9 Songs was shot entirely on DV, using hand-held cameras, no extra lighting, no script and a film crew that was limited to just the director, camera, sound, and a production assistant. Produced by Andrew Eaton (In This World, 24 Hour Party People, Wonderland), 9 Songs made headlines as the most sexually explicit film to be awarded an 18 certificate by the BBFC and is a landmark film in the history of British censorship.
