2046 (12) starring Tony Leung, Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li, and Takuya Kimura
Set in late 60s Hong Kong, out-of-work journalist Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung) lives in a cheap hotel. Having never forgotten his almost-affair with a married woman (Maggie Cheung) he develops a series of short-term relationships with a call girl tenant (Ziyi Zhang), hotel manager’s daughter (Faye Wong) and gambler (Gong Li). He is trying to write pulp sci-fi novel about a hi-tech train to the future but equally exploring his own memories and desires.
Wong Kar-Wai’s richly lyrical follow-up to In The Mood For Love is also his eighth film. His unique style has won him a loyal following from critics and audiences alike, and the premiere of the film at Cannes last year became one of the most anticipated events of the festival. He has assembled a stellar cast of Hong Kong’s international talent including his regular leading man, Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs, Hero). The cast also includes Ziyi Zhang – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers), Faye Wong – Chunking Express; Chinese Odyssey 2002), Gong Li – Raise the Red Lantern; Farewell My Concubine). Takuya Kimura (House of Flying Daggers), Carina Lau (Days of Being Wild, Infernal Affairs 2) and a cameo appearance by Maggie Cheung, Leung’s co-star in In The Mood For Love and Hero. The film’s seductive visual atmosphere is created by award-winning cinematographer and long-time Kar-wai collaborator, Chris Doyle. A spellbinding, multi-layered tale of enduring loss and love by one of modern cinema’s enduring craftsmen.
