It’s time to go Bollywood crazy as the spectacular smash-hit, BRIDE AND PREJUDICE, is released onto DVD and video. Directed and written by Bend It Like Beckham’s Gurinder Chadha, this vibrant feast for the eyes is available on March 14th 2005 from Pathé Distribution Ltd.
Capturing the brightness and vivacity of Bollywood and its infectious sense of energy, this effervescent adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic English novel, Pride and Prejudice, replaces the Bennett sisters with the Bakshi sisters and moves their home from rural England to small town India.
The Bakshi family have four beautiful daughters ripe for marriage and given every encouragement by their traditional mother, Mrs Bakshi (Nadira Babbar). In their vibrant hometown full of fun and friends, the girls just can’t seem to find the sort of man they are looking for. The eldest daughter Jaya (Namrata Shirodkar) attracts the attentions of rich, handsome Balraj (Naveen Andrews, The English Patient), home on a trip from England, while Lalita (Aishwarya Rai) takes a strong dislike to his friend, the snobbish, condescending American hotelier Will Darcy (Martin Henderson, The Ring).

While Jaya and Balraj´s love blossoms on a trip to Goa, Darcy and Lalita become even more argumentative and try to fight their growing attraction to each other. To add fuel to fire, Darcy´s old adversary, Wickham (Daniel Gillies, Spiderman 2), an open-minded, free-spirited back-packer who seems much more in touch with the ‘real’ India turns up to woo Lalita.
The sisters return home, coinciding with the arrival of Mr Kholi (Nitrin Ganatra, The Canterbury Tales), a distant relative of the family who is now a flashy accountant in LA, and looking to take one of the Bakshi sisters for his bride. With Jaya practically engaged to Belraj, Lalita knows she will be the first in line for Mr Kholi’s affections and is hugely relived with Wickham pays a visit and provides her with an escape route. But is Wickham all he seems? And what’s the truth about his relationship with Darcy?
With lavish sets, infectious musical numbers and some great comedic performances, the shiny colours of Bride & Prejudice will brighten up your winter! With extensive, exclusive special features including ‘making-of’ featurettes, interactive features, behind-the-scenes documentaries, deleted scenes, biographies and commentaries, Bride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy delight that will assault your senses this Spring!
Learn the lesson that there’s no ‘life without wife’, or indeed, no DVD collection complete without this Bollywood adaptation of a great classic!
