“The funniest film of the year” GQ Magazine
Sign up for a tour of the Californian wineries and discover for yourself writer-director Alexander Payne’s hilarious and touching film Sideways, released to buy and rent on DVD and video on 16th May 2005 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Winner of the Academy Award® and BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as two Golden Globes, this wry, offbeat comedy takes a sideways look at life, love, friendship and wine! Based on Rex Pickett’s novel of the same name, Sideways follows the road trip taken by two old friends; Miles (Paul Giamatti; American Splendor, Paycheck), a depressed would-be writer with a passion for wine-tasting, and Jack, (Thomas Haden Church; Spanglish), a happy-go-lucky, womanising, one-time TV star. It is the week before Jack’s wedding, and the two are out to celebrate his last week of freedom. Miles selects a trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, which for him means re-visiting some old haunts and familiar faces.
“If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving” Miles
The mismatched pair turn out to have very different views of their holiday. Miles is happy to drink good wine, play golf, eat great food, and enjoy the scenery. Jack, on the other hand, just wants to get laid. It’s not long before Jack meets Stephanie (Sandra Oh; Under The Tuscan Sun) and the two embark on a passionate fling. Meanwhile, Miles runs into Maya (Virginia Madsen, The Rainmaker), a waitress who shares his passion and knowledge of wine, and the pair edge towards a tentative romance. Emerging from a haze of pinot noir, Miles and Jack inevitably collide with reality – and it’s not always pretty!
Warm, funny and involving, Sideways is Alexander Payne’s fourth feature film (after Citizen Ruth, Election and About Schmidt), and has achieved worldwide acclaim. The DVD is packed with special features including commentaries by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, behind the scenes featurette, deleted scenes and Easter eggs. Indulge your senses and develop a sharper palette this May with Sideways on DVD.
