Written and directed by Christopher Cain (Young Guns, The Principle) and inspired by the controversial real-life tragedy of The Mountain Meadows Massacre, September Dawn depicts the tragedy that took place on September 11, 1857, in the Utah Territory.
When a California-bound group of Arkansas emigrants arrives, Mormon Bishop and General Jacob Samuelson (Voight) allows the settlers to rest in the nearby Mountain Meadows for two weeks, but secretly instructs his sons Jonathan to keep a close watch.
Then under the guidance of Brigham Young (Stamp), the Bishop convinces his Mormon community to savagely murder the Arkansas settlers. Amidst this, two young lovers-to-be, Jonathan (Ford), the son of General and Mormon bishop Samuelson and Emily (Tamara Hope, Saint Ralph), the daughter of one of the doomed settlers from Arkansas, develop a relationship despite the atmosphere of suspicion and rancor.
