In 1992 Stephan Elliott wrote a script called “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” to pass time in New Zealand while incarcerated for poor judgment. Stephan has seen many of the shows that costume designer Tim Chappel had worked on, and asked his friend to design the costumes for his new project ”The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”.
Tim Chappel is from outback New South Wales. He attended Sydney College of the Arts studying for a Bachelor of Arts/Design in the late 80’s.
Chappel's design career began in college; designing costumes and dancing with a nightclub theatre group called Glamourworld. Tim went on to design costumes for many of Sydney’s premier Drag Artists as well as "a slew of Society Dames", according to him.
Tim won the Australian Film Industry award, British Academy of Film and Television Award and an Oscar from the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences in America for this hit cult film.
The 1994 film has been released in a special “Extra Frills” Edition DVD is debuting on June 5th.
They came. They conquered. They looked fabulous. This wonderfully inventive, visually stunning and incomparably funny Australian import about three drag performers braving the vast, rugged outback won the 1994 Academy Award for Costume Design. Veteran actors Terence Stamp (the original "Billy Budd"), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) all give hilarious and heartfelt performances in a classic fish out of water story that's "one of the wildest movies ever made" - according to Rex Reed for the New York Observer.
With a contract to perform a drag show way out in the Australian desert, Tick (Weaving), Adam (Pearce) and Ralph (Stamp) each has his own reason for wanting to leave the safety of Sydney. Christening their battered pink tour bus "Priscilla," this wickedly funny and high-drama trio head for the Outback...and into crazy adventures in even crazier outfits. You go, girls!

"Priscilla" became a surprise box-office hit. Even ten years later, this film holds up well and watching these three roam the expansive Australian abyss is still funny and charming.
